Somalia

Somalia, officially the Federal Republic of Somalia, is a country located in the Horn of Africa with a long coastline along the Indian Ocean. Its capital city is Mogadishu. Somalia has faced decades of political instability, terrorism, and humanitarian challenges, but remains strategically important in East African trade and regional security.

Quick facts about Somalia

  1. Named after the Somali ethnic majority inhabiting the Horn of Africa, derived historically from ancient terms referencing the nomadic pastoralist groups (Somaal) or coastal trading posts.
  2. Formed on July 1, 1960, through the unification of British Somaliland and Italian Somaliland, establishing the modern sovereign state framework.
  3. Plunged into protracted state collapse following the overthrow of Siad Barre in 1991; central state authority continues to battle the Al-Qaeda-affiliated Al-Shabaab insurgency, which routinely controls rural tracts and executes urban asymmetric attacks despite African Union peacekeeping support (ATMIS).
  4. Operates under a federal parliamentary system (the Federal Government of Somalia, FGS, based in Mogadishu) that struggles with deep structural friction, clan-based power-sharing, and volatile disputes with federal member states (such as Puntland and Jubaland).
  5. Vigorously rejects Somaliland’s self-declared independence, backed by the African Union, Arab League, and the United Nations, maintaining that Somaliland constitutes an inalienable federal member territory of sovereign Somalia.
