Larry Madowo’s Tanzania Protest Killings Documentary Wins 2026 NABJ Award

CNN correspondent Larry Madowo has received a 2026 Salute to Excellence Award for his documentary investigating killings linked to protests in Tanzania.

Madowo was recognised by the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) during its 2026 Convention & Career Fair, held in Atlanta, Georgia, from August 12 to 16.

The Salute to Excellence Awards recognise outstanding journalism and honour work that demonstrates strong reporting and professional excellence across different forms of media.

Madowo’s documentary focused on deaths linked to protests in Tanzania, examining accounts surrounding the violence and the circumstances in which people were killed.

The CNN correspondent announced the award on Sunday, August 16, saying he was grateful for the recognition and acknowledging the people whose accounts contributed to the investigation.

The award comes as international attention continues to focus on Tanzania’s handling of protests and allegations surrounding the use of force against demonstrators.

Madowo has previously reported extensively from across Africa, including on political developments, conflict and human rights issues.

The NABJ Convention & Career Fair brought together journalists, media professionals, employers and other industry participants in Atlanta for several days of discussions, networking and recognition of journalism achievements.

The 2026 Salute to Excellence recognition adds to Madowo’s record of awards and honours for his reporting and documentary work.

In announcing the award, Madowo also highlighted the importance of the people who shared their experiences and accounts with his reporting team, recognising their role in bringing the stories investigated in the documentary to a wider audience.
