Former Simba Coach Fadlu Returns to Tanzania as a rival Yanga Head Coach

South African coach Fadlu Davids has returned to Tanzania, but this time he is taking charge of a club whose name carries a very different meaning for supporters of his former employers. The former Simba SC head coach has officially joined Young Africans SC (Yanga), bringing an unusual twist to one of East Africa’s most fiercely contested football rivalries.

Davids arrived at Julius Nyerere International Airport in Dar es Salaam on Saturday, November 7, 2026, where he spoke enthusiastically about returning to a country he described as home. He was welcomed by supporters and club representatives as he began a new chapter with the Jangwani-based side.

“Tanzania feels like home,” Davids said, expressing appreciation for the welcome he has received from Tanzanians. He added that he was happy to be back and looking forward to working with what he described as a big club.

His appointment is particularly interesting because of the club he previously coached. Davids led Simba between July 2024 and September 2025, becoming familiar with the pressure, expectations and intensity surrounding the rivalry between Simba and Yanga. Now, he has moved to the other side of that divide, with Yanga hoping his experience can help them maintain their domestic strength and make a greater impact in African competitions.

The rivalry between the two Dar es Salaam giants, commonly known as the Kariakoo Derby, is among the biggest sporting spectacles in East Africa. Their meetings regularly attract enormous crowds, with supporters filling stadiums and the city’s football conversation often revolving around the two clubs. The rivalry extends beyond the pitch, carrying commercial, cultural and emotional significance for millions of fans.

Davids, however, did not attempt to turn his arrival into a discussion about his former club. Instead, he focused on the challenge ahead, explaining that Yanga’s president had approached him several times before the two sides finally reached an agreement.

He revealed that this was approximately the third time he had received a call from Yanga’s leadership, but said the decision ultimately depended on finding the right moment.

The coach said discussions with the club’s president convinced him that Yanga had a project worth joining. He acknowledged the club’s domestic success over the past five years and said the priority was to preserve that foundation while developing a clear playing style and football philosophy.

He also spoke about gradually rebuilding the squad and strengthening it during the transfer window, with the aim of keeping Yanga competitive at the highest level.

Although Yanga have enjoyed remarkable domestic success in recent seasons, Davids acknowledged that the current campaign had not started as the club would have wanted. He nevertheless believes the squad has enough quality and depth to turn things around.

“The season hasn’t been the best so far, but we have the Champions League to look forward to,” he said, adding that he remained ambitious despite what he described as a difficult Champions League group.

He insisted that everything remained possible and praised the quality available across the squad, saying his immediate responsibility would be to get onto the training ground, assess the players and establish a style of football that supporters could be proud of.

His ambitions extend beyond Tanzania. Davids said Yanga wanted to compete for every available trophy and make progress in continental football, arguing that the club should not be satisfied with domestic success alone.

“This time, we don’t only want domestic success; we want CAF intercontinental success,” he said, setting out an ambition that reflects the expectations surrounding one of Tanzania’s most supported clubs.

His previous spell at Simba suggests what Yanga may expect. During the 2024/25 season, Davids guided Simba to the CAF Confederation Cup final, where they lost to Morocco’s RS Berkane. The campaign was especially significant because Simba reached the competition’s semi-finals for the first time in 32 years before progressing to the final.

Domestically, Simba finished second in the league with 78 points, four behind Yanga, who secured their fifth consecutive league title. Davids also received recognition for his work, including multiple Tanzania Premier League Coach of the Month awards.

His Simba tenure did not end with a major trophy, but it left him with a strong continental achievement and considerable experience in Tanzanian football. That experience could prove valuable as he takes charge of a Yanga side seeking to defend its position at home while pursuing greater success in Africa.

The new coach is also expected to work with familiar members of his technical team. South African assistant coach Darian Wilken and performance analyst Mueez Kajee arrived in Dar es Salaam alongside him, having previously worked with Davids at both Simba and Raja Casablanca.

For Yanga supporters, the immediate expectation will be to see how quickly the new coach can establish his ideas and improve the team’s performances. For Simba supporters, his arrival at Jangwani will undoubtedly add another talking point to the rivalry, particularly given the knowledge he carries from his previous time at Msimbazi.

Davids’ return has therefore created an unusual football storyline: a coach who once carried Simba’s ambitions is now being trusted with Yanga’s. He has not arrived promising to settle old scores or make remarks about his former employers. His message has instead been about building a new team, maintaining success and taking Yanga further on the continental stage.

The challenge now is to turn those promises into results. And in a rivalry where every victory matters, his first meetings with Simba will carry an added layer of interest.
