The United Nations (UN) is an international organization founded in 1945 after World War II to promote global peace, security, diplomacy, and human rights. Headquartered in New York City, the organization consists of nearly every sovereign nation in the world and operates through major bodies, including the General Assembly, Security Council, and International Court of Justice. The UN is involved in humanitarian aid, conflict resolution, climate policy, refugee protection, and sustainable development efforts across the globe.
The United States was the only country to oppose a UN resolution promoting maps that better represent Africa’s true land area, arguing that the initiative distracts from more pressing international issues.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres has described Africa’s exclusion from permanent membership in the UN Security Council as a “historical injustice” rooted in colonial history.
