Cocaine

Cocaine is a naturally occurring, potent tropane alkaloid and central nervous system (CNS) stimulant extracted from the leaves of the Erythroxylum coca plant. Mechanistically, it acts as a triple reuptake inhibitor, blocking the reabsorption of dopamine, serotonin, and norepinephrine in neural synapses, causing a rapid accumulation of neurochemicals that produces intense euphoria, heightened alert states, and elevated heart rates. Though classified as a Schedule II controlled substance with limited legal medical use as a topical local anesthetic in nasal/facial surgeries, its high potential for dependence, cardiovascular toxicity, and lethal overdose makes it a dominant commodity in illegal drug trades globally.
