Quick facts about Ethiopia

Formally known historically as Abyssinia (derived from the Ge'ez Habashat), the modern title Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia was adopted under the 1995 Constitution.
  2. Recognized as Africa's oldest independent nation, having maintained sovereignty by defeating Italian forces at the Battle of Adwa on March 1, 1896; modern federal institutional boundaries were enacted on August 21, 1995.
  3. Holds a nominal GDP of approximately $205 billion (IMF 2026 data), maintaining an annual real GDP growth rate of ~9.2% driven by infrastructure, agriculture, and services. Total external public debt stands at $34.4 billion, with annual headline inflation cooling to ~11.7% following tight National Bank of Ethiopia policy rates.
  4. Following severe foreign exchange shortages and post-war fiscal strain, Ethiopia officially defaulted on its $1 billion Eurobond in December 2023 after missing a $33 million coupon payment; it reached a formal restructuring agreement with private bondholders in mid-2026 under the G20 Common Framework.
