China

China, officially the People’s Republic of China (PRC), is a global superpower and the world’s second-largest economy by nominal GDP. Located in East Asia, it is the most populous nation on earth, governed by the Communist Party of China (CPC).

Quick facts about China

  1. The Western name "China" derives via Persian (Chīn) and Sanskrit (Cīna) from the Qin Dynasty (221–206 BC), established by Qin Shi Huang, who unified the warring states into the first centralized Chinese empire. The endonym Zhōngguó translates directly to "Middle Kingdom" or "Central State."
  2. China’s modern socio-political doctrine is built around overcoming the Bǎinián Guóchǐ ("Century of Humiliation"), a 110-year period initiated by the First Opium War (1839) that saw foreign imperial powers impose "Unequal Treaties," cede Hong Kong to Britain, and fragment state sovereignty until the 1949 Communist victory.
  3. China stands as the world's primary industrial power, producing over 28% of global manufacturing output, more than the United States and Japan combined, while building the world's largest high-speed rail network spanning over 45,000 kilometers.
  4. On June 4, 1989, the Chinese military forcibly cleared pro-democracy student protesters from Beijing's Tiananmen Square, killing hundreds to thousands of civilians; the event triggered the construction of the "Great Firewall," the planet's most sophisticated digital censorship and surveillance apparatus.
  5. Under Deng Xiaoping, China launched radical market-oriented reforms in 1978, establishing Special Economic Zones (SEZs) like Shenzhen; the policy lifted over 800 million citizens out of poverty in four decades; the fastest economic expansion in recorded human history.
