João Lourenço

3rd President of Angola

João Manuel Gonçalves Lourenço is an Angolan politician, retired army general, and the 3rd President of Angola, serving in office since September 2017. Rising through the ranks of the ruling MPLA as a Cold War military officer and Minister of Defense, Lourenço surprised international observers upon taking power by aggressively dismantling the entrenched patronage networks of his predecessor, José Eduardo dos Santos. As President, his administration has centered on economic diversification away from crude oil dependency, privatizing non-core state enterprises, courting Western infrastructure capital for critical mineral export routes, and leading regional peace diplomacy across the Great Lakes and Southern Africa.
