Apple Declares iPhone X and 2018 MacBook Pro Obsolete, ending newer software upgrades and authorized repair

Apple has added the iPhone X and 2018 15-inch MacBook Pro to its obsolete products list, ending official repair and replacement parts support for both devices.

Apple has officially classified the iPhone X and the 2018 15-inch MacBook Pro as obsolete, meaning the company and its authorised service providers will no longer provide repairs or replacement parts for the two products.

Apple generally classifies a product as vintage after it has not been distributed for sale for more than five years but less than seven years. Products become obsolete after more than seven years have passed since Apple last distributed them for sale.

The iPhone X was launched in 2017 and marked a major change in Apple’s smartphone design. It was the company’s first iPhone to feature Face ID and an OLED display, while also introducing the edge-to-edge design with the now-familiar notch.

The 2018 15-inch MacBook Pro was also notable for introducing Apple’s T2 security chip to the MacBook line. The chip supports security features, including Touch ID and Secure Boot.

Both devices have already reached the end of their major software support. The iPhone X cannot officially be upgraded beyond iOS 16, while the 2018 15-inch MacBook Pro is limited to macOS Sequoia.

The obsolete classification does not mean that the devices will immediately stop working. Existing owners can continue using them, but obtaining official repairs from Apple or its authorised service providers will no longer be an option.

Owners who need repairs will instead have to rely on independent or third-party repair providers. However, finding replacement components could become more difficult over time as the supply of parts for the ageing devices decreases.

The iPhone X remains particularly significant in Apple’s history because it introduced several features and design changes that became standard across later generations of iPhones.

The 2018 MacBook Pro similarly represented an important stage in Apple’s transition toward greater hardware security, with the T2 chip later appearing in several other Mac models.

For owners of either device, the change primarily affects access to official servicing and replacement parts rather than the immediate ability to use the products.
