Emmerson Mnangagwa

Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa is a Zimbabwean politician, former liberation fighter, and the current President of Zimbabwe, holding power since November 2017 following the military-assisted overthrow of Robert Mugabe. Operating within the ruling ZANU-PF party since the anti-colonial struggle, Mnangagwa previously served in key state positions, including Minister of State Security, Minister of Justice, Speaker of Parliament, and Vice President. Known for his consolidation of state intelligence networks and control over national resources, his administration operates on a platform of state-backed infrastructure development, economic nationalist policies, and tight security control over opposition movements.

Quick facts about Emmerson Mnangagwa

  1. His nickname, "Garwe" ("The Crocodile"), originates from his leadership of the "Crocodile Gang" an armed sabotage unit he co-founded in the 1960s during the Rhodesian Bush War and references his political reputation for calculated patience and ruthless strikes.
  2. In 1965, he was arrested by Rhodesian authorities for bombing a locomotive near Masvingo; he escaped execution because court records confirmed he was under 21 years old, serving a 10-year prison sentence alongside Robert Mugabe instead.
  3. As Minister of State Security under Mugabe, he oversaw the Fifth Brigade operations in Matabeleland and Midlands, an ethnic crackdown that resulted in the mass execution, torture, and burial in mass graves of an estimated 20,000 Ndebele civilians.
  4. In August 2017, he survived an alleged severe food poisoning attempt (publicly attributed to poisoned ice cream from Grace Mugabe's dairy farm) at a ruling party rally; three months later, after Mugabe fired him as Vice President, Mnangagwa orchestrated a military coup d'état that ended Mugabe’s 37-year reign.
  5. In March 2024, the U.S. government repealed its legacy Zimbabwe sanctions program and replaced it by placing Mnangagwa himself, his wife Auxillia, and key security aides on the Global Magnitsky Sanctions List for direct involvement in gold and diamond smuggling syndicates and violent political repression.
  6. After winning a disputed August 2023 re-election, Mnangagwa signed Constitutional Amendment Bill No. 3 into law in mid-2026, extending his presidential term and postponing national elections to 2030, bypassing two-term constitutional limits.
