Corruption

Corruption is defined as the abuse of entrusted power for private gain, a systemic challenge that erodes public trust, weakens democratic institutions, and stifles economic development globally. It manifests in various forms, including bribery, embezzlement, nepotism, and money laundering, and can occur at all levels—from petty “grease payments” in daily transactions to grand corruption involving high-level state officials and multi-billion-dollar public contracts. In the African context, corruption remains a critical barrier to achieving the goals of the African Union’s Agenda 2063, as it diverts essential resources away from healthcare, education, and infrastructure.
