Canada

Canada is a North American sovereign nation and a prominent member of the G7 and G20. As of May 2026, the country is led by Prime Minister Mark Carney, who took office following the April 2025 federal election. Under the Carney administration’s “Canada Strong” mandate, the nation has shifted its strategic focus toward economic sovereignty, massive reinvestment in national defense, and the rapid modernization of its industrial sectors to navigate a turbulent global trade environment.

Quick facts about Canada

  1. The name derives from the St. Lawrence Iroquoian word "kanata," meaning "village" or "settlement." In 1535, French explorer Jacques Cartier misheard local Indigenous youths using the word to direct him to the village of Stadacona (modern-day Quebec City), mistakenly applying "Canada" to the entire surrounding territory.
  2. Canada holds the world's longest coastline at 202,080 kilometers (125,567 miles). It also contains more lake area than the rest of the world combined, housing roughly 60% of the planet's natural freshwater lakes (over 2 million lakes total).
  3. Despite gaining legislative independence in 1931, Canada could not amend its own Constitution without British parliamentary approval until Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau pushed through the Constitution Act, 1982, officially "patriating" the Constitution and inserting the Charter of Rights and Freedoms.
  4. Between 1831 and 1996, the Canadian federal government and Christian churches forcibly separated over 150,000 Indigenous children from their families into mandatory boarding schools designed for cultural assimilation. The 2015 Truth and Reconciliation Commission officially declared the system an act of "cultural genocide" following the discovery of thousands of undocumented mass graves on former school grounds.
  5. Over 75% of Canada’s total exports are destined for a single trade partner; the United States. Under the 1957 NORAD agreement, Canada relies entirely on a joint bi-national military command structure with Washington for the aerospace defense and sovereign early-warning detection of North America.
