BTS

BTS “Bangtan Sonyeondan” is a seven-member South Korean boy band, comprising RM, Jin, Suga, J-Hope, Jimin, V, and Jungkook, which evolved from an underground-leaning hip-hop group into the biggest pop act in the world. Renowned for their complex choreography, conceptual album series (Love Yourself, Map of the Soul), and active involvement in songwriting and production, the group broke Western cultural barriers for non-English music while building an unprecedented global fan ecosystem. Following a mandatory military service hiatus, the group’s structural foundation stands as the modern benchmark for globalized media and pop culture economics.

Quick facts about BTS

  1. Formed on June 13, 2013, by Big Hit Entertainment founder Bang Si-hyuk, the name translates to "Bulletproof Boy Scouts" (방탄소년단), conceived to act as a ideological shield blocking societal pressure, judgment, and prejudice aimed at teenagers.
  2. They hold over 500+ major total wins globally, including a record-shattering 70+ Daesangs (Grand Prizes, South Korea's highest music honor) and 12 Billboard Music Awards, making them the most awarded group in South Korean music history.
  3. They were officially inducted into the Guinness World Records 2022 Hall of Fame after accumulating 23 distinct world records, including the most viewed YouTube video in 24 hours ("Butter" at 108.2 million views) and the most tickets sold for a live-streamed concert (756,000 across 107 countries).
  4. Early in their career (2015–2016), the group faced intense online harassment (haemul) from rival fandoms accusing their lyrics and visual concepts of plagiarizing Western hip-hop acts and senior K-pop groups like SHINee and EXO, forcing RM to publicly address writing transparency on future tracks.
  5. In 2015, established K-pop fandoms accused Big Hit of sajaegi (illegal bulk-buying to rig music charts) when BTS’s album The Most Beautiful Moment in Life, Part 1 suddenly out-sold industry giant EXO; Big Hit denied the claims, and South Korea’s Ministry of Culture cleared them after an official review.
