WHO

The World Health Organization (WHO) is a specialized agency of the United Nations responsible for international public health and disease prevention. Founded in 1948 and headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland, the WHO coordinates global responses to health emergencies, outbreaks, pandemics, vaccinations, and healthcare development. The organization plays a central role in combating diseases such as COVID-19, Ebola, HIV/AIDS, and malaria while promoting global health standards and medical research.

Quick facts about WHO

  1. Created as a specialized, autonomous agency of the United Nations, its name was intentionally chosen to emphasize a "World" (universal) scope rather than an "International" (inter-governmental) construct, signaling an unconditional responsibility toward all humans regardless of state sovereignty.
  2. Its constitution was adopted on July 22, 1946, and came into full legal force on April 7, 1948, a date now celebrated globally every year as World Health Day.
  3. In 1980, after a decade-long $300 million global vaccination campaign spearheaded by its Smallpox Eradication Unit, the WHO officially declared variola virus (smallpox) completely eradicated marking the first and only human infectious disease successfully wiped out by deliberate intervention in medical history.
  4. In September 2021, an independent commission revealed that at least 83 health and aid workers including 21 WHO employees perpetrated systemic sexual exploitation and rape against local women and girls aged 13 to 43 in the Democratic Republic of the Congo during the 2018–2020 Ebola outbreak.
  5. Over 80% of the WHO’s multi-billion dollar biennial budget ($6.83 billion for 2024–2025) relies on voluntary earmarked contributions from individual nation-states and private mega-philanthropies (such as the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation) rather than fixed mandatory member-state dues, creating persistent vulnerabilities to external geopolitical pressure and targeted funding freezes.
