Museveni Congratulates Grandson After Joining Uganda’s Military

Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni has congratulated his grandson Ruhamya Kainerugaba after he joined the Uganda People’s Defence Forces alongside his friend Bakyira.

Museveni shared the message on social media, saying he was grateful that his grandson had become part of the UPDF after graduating from the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in the United Kingdom.

Ruhamya joins the military at a time when the UPDF is led by his father, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, who serves as the army’s Chief of Defence Forces.

In his message, Museveni thanked God for protecting Uganda and helping the country address what he described as its numerous challenges.

He also praised the National Resistance Movement (NRM), saying God had blessed the ruling party for more than 60 years, including through its political predecessors.

“I want to use this occasion to thank God that has protected and enabled Uganda to address its numerous problems,” Museveni wrote.

“I now thank God for blessing the NRM for the last 60 years plus, starting with its precursors,” he added.

The president then congratulated Ruhamya and Bakyira for completing their military training at Sandhurst and joining the UPDF.

“Now, God has blessed me with one of my grandchildren, Ruhamya, joining my big family of UPDF, having graduated, with his colleague, Bakyira, from Sandhurst recently,” Museveni said.

“Congratulations Ruhamya, congratulations Bakyira.”

Museveni also encouraged other young Ugandans to consider military service, saying it could provide them with a strong foundation.

“Young Ugandans, Army service gives you good foundation,” he wrote, while congratulating the parents of the two young officers.

Ruhamya’s entry into the UPDF adds another member of the Museveni family to Uganda’s military establishment. His father, Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has held senior positions in the UPDF and currently heads the country’s armed forces.

Museveni has been president of Uganda since 1986, while the UPDF remains one of the country’s key state institutions.
