Namibia’s President Heads to South Africa for SADC Summit

Namibian President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah has travelled to Durban, South Africa, to attend the 46th Ordinary Summit of SADC Heads of State and Government on August 17.

Nandi-Ndaitwah departed Namibia for the South African city ahead of the summit, which will bring together leaders from across the Southern African Development Community (SADC) to discuss regional priorities.

The summit is being hosted by South African President Cyril Ramaphosa and will focus on strengthening cooperation among member states and advancing efforts towards resilient, sustainable and inclusive development.

The meeting comes as SADC countries continue to work together on issues including economic development, infrastructure, agriculture, regional trade and the management of strategic natural resources.

The summit will be held under the theme, “Resilient, Sustainable and Inclusive Industrialisation through Infrastructure Development, Agricultural and Critical Minerals Transformation in Pursuit of a Just World.”

The theme places infrastructure development, agricultural transformation and critical minerals at the centre of the region’s efforts to promote industrialisation and economic growth.

Critical minerals have become increasingly important to countries seeking to expand industrial production and participate more directly in global supply chains, while agriculture remains a major source of employment and economic activity across Southern Africa.

The summit will provide SADC leaders with an opportunity to discuss how member states can cooperate in developing infrastructure and industries while ensuring that economic growth benefits a wider section of their populations.

Nandi-Ndaitwah’s participation comes as Namibia continues to position itself as an important player in the region’s development, particularly in areas such as infrastructure, mining and energy.
